When I was a child my Dad brought home a puppy. My sister and I were so excited and thrilled to have a puppy but our excitement was short lived. The active little puppy was obviously not house-trained and my Mom scared the little thing to death by chasing it around with a broom. The poor little puppy was so scared that it did “its business” all over the house which incited my Mom even more – these were the days before “wee-wee” pads.  The next morning when my sister and I woke up the puppy was gone – that was the end of having a pet until about 8 days ago.

Eight days ago a tiny kitten wandered on our property and we had no idea where he came from - he couldn't have been more than three or four weeks old. The kitten looked lost and frightened. My partner went to pick him up. He handed the kitten to me and the little thing was shaking uncontrollably. It took some time but he calmed down. No one in the neighborhood came looking for him and we asked some neighbors if the kitten was theirs but no one claimed him so we adopted him.

Never having had a pet before I never knew the bond that can develop between a pet and its caretaker – I can now say I love that little kitten and he brings me such happiness. I also find myself worrying about his welfare and wanting to protect him.  His name is Ponchito (little Poncho).

My partner and I have decided that wherever we live little Panchito will be with us – he is now part of our family.

Enjoy the holiday weekend – I know I will with Panchito.
