I have not only survived domestic violence but I have survived breast cancer too. Years after my divorce I was diagnosed with DCIS (Ductal carcinoma in situ).  When the doctor told me the news I was in shock. My first thought was “Why me? I don’t need another character building exercise”.  I was fortunate that it was caught early and after a lumpectomy and radiation treatment I was cancer free.

Well it’s been over 10 years since my cancer and all my mammographies have been perfect -  except for today.  Today the mammography showed a tiny “something”. The doctor did a sonogram too and the “something” is there, but the “something “is so small that the only course of treatment is to “watch” it. So I have to get a mammography every six months to see if the “something” changes or as the doctor said “It might go away”.

Thank goodness  the “something” is small and the doctors will watch it. I am praying that the “something” turns out to be a “nothing”.

October is a big month for me as it is Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness Month and I have survived both. Here is my public service announcement: If you have not had your annual mammography; schedule it. Early detection saves lives, I know it saved mine.
